Coiled basket

Traditional Ngarrabul/Gomeroi coiled baskets were intricately woven.  The baskets are either rectangle or oblong in shape.

A single strand of grass/sedge woven over multi-stands of core fibre; the stitch is identical to buttonhole stitch.  Sometimes handles of string are attached to coiled baskets.  Grasses and rushes are used to make coiled baskets.

Dilly bag

String bags were made from barks from Kurrajong, stringy bark and paper bark.  String bags are made with one continuous strand of string, either using a simple loop technique or a knotted looping technique.

Looped or knotted bag

Unique looped and knotted bag bearing recognisable diagonal pattern are recorded as evidence of pre-colonisation weaving practices distinct to the people of South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales’.

The bag is made by twisting the fibre like you would to make string, before looping stitches together and then knotting the ends together and then knotting the ends together in diagonal pattern.
