In this activity, we would like you to use Aboriginal symbols to tell, in your own way, your story. It might be about your family, your country or your journey through life so far. Maybe you want to express and share something significant that happened earlier in you life. Or perhaps you will use your Totem as the feature of your artwork.
Review the information that you have engaged with about symbols, and Indigenous culture. You may also wish to be creative and create your own symbols.
Many artists may put together groups of symbols as their way of telling a story. They will use their own stylistic and technical approach through the use of colour and symbols so use your imagination and get creative with it.
- Think about what symbols you might use to tell your story. Review Indigenous art symbols
- Design your work first, you may want to draw a draft on paper first or copy the outline image of your totem.
- Remember to get creative and try different colours.
In this video, you can watch the process of an Indigenous art work that develops as the story is told.
