Experience dayS

FAQ

Who should attend?

The program is aimed at high students in years 10-12. We ask that schools select students they believe could benefit most from visiting UNE and experiencing university life.

How many days should we attend?

As many or as few as you need.

You will be required to make a booking and select the dates your school group will be attending. This year’s program has been designed to allow students and schools to select the days that most interest them. A daily registration and briefing will be conducted. This year’s program is offering split session streams so students will be able to plan their program and book into sessions ahead of time.

Do our teaching staff need to attend to supervise students?

Yes.

Students will need adult supervision in accordance with the Department of Education and school policies for school excursions. If your school is only sending one student, the student may be accompanied by their parent or carer instead. The supervision is the responsibility of the school to organise.

What is the limit on how many students a school can bring?

10

We ask that schools select up to 10 students to participate. We will have a wait list for additional participants, so please let us know if you have more than 10 students and you will be notified if additional space becomes available.

Are there any activities planned for the evening?

For participants staying overnight, yes.

This will generally include dinner and a social activity such as movies, trivia night at college, food truck dinner night etc. These will be organised at college and in town. We will have a select group of staff, student ambassadors and college leaders in attendance each night.

Can Oorala & UNE assist with the costs of attending?

We can assist with the following expenses to attend the program:

  • Travel: fuel, public transport and private transport costs will be reimbursed or paid for prior to departure. Please liaise with the team at Oorala to make your arrangements as early as possible.
  • Accommodation: participants will be staying at a campus college.
  • Meals: all meals will be provided during your time on campus.

What do students need to bring?

  • Comfortable clothing with enclosed footwear for daily activities. Please pack according to weather forecasts.
  • Activewear for students that will be participating in a sports session.
  • Toiletries and Medication (as required).

What should I know about staying at college?

Your visit to UNE will fall during Trimester 3 of the UNE calendar. This means that residents of the college will be there during your stay. However, Experience Day guests will be housed separate to current students (floors/blocks).

  • Students will have their own lockable room (includes all bedding).
  • Bathrooms are communal and include several toilet and shower cubicles. Students should be prepared to share these facilities with other Experience Day participants as this is the typical university experience. If schools or individuals have concerns with this arrangement, please advise the planning team prior to arriving.
  • The college is also home to two friendly rescue dogs. If you are not a dog person, maybe you have fears or allergies, it’s important to let us know.
