Meet local artists Adele-Chapman Burgess and Avril Chapman

Creative sisters, Adele and Avril, are proud Ngarrabul/Gamilaraay/ Yuwaalaraay/Kooma women from the New England area who share share their knowledge of weaving and traditional culture with us.

In other topics in this lesson, they show you a variety of woven baskets and receptacles that can be used for a variety of things.

Avril and Adele will tell you what to buy and how to collect native grasses suitable to weaving, as well as show you the basics of creating a basket.

To complete this lesson, you can request a materials supply kit from Oorala. After reading the information here,  you are asked to weave a basket or other object to your choosing. Finally, take a photo of your creation and submit it online.

Weaving on Country  with Adele Chapman-Burgess and Avril Chapman.

Avril and Adele speak about their heritage and experiences learning to weave.  They share with you the traditional process of gathering and preparing grasses and reeds collected from country.  They talk about their connection to country and how the weaving circle helps to awaken cultural understanding and how the yarning that goes in between the weaving is wound into the product and creates a connectiveness and a way of being present in the circle.
