This Experience Day will provide an opportunity for students to be exposed to life on campus, focusing on academic preparation, careers and hands-on experience in the UNE School of Science and Technology, with a focus on Bio-Medical Science and Sports Science.

Bio-Medical Science: Dr Gal Winter & Dr Richard Charlesworth will discuss with students the digestive process and the important role microbes play in it. Then they will examine the consequences of different food choices on digestion and microbial diversity and have a visual demonstration of the digestive system using ultrasound.

Dr Gal Winter joined UNE in 2015. Gal’s main research interests include biomedical and food aspects of microbiology, microbiome, including the gutbrain axis and the effects of environmental microbes on the human microbiome. Her teaching areas include Microbiology, Nutrition and Clinical Biochemistry. Dr Richard Charlesworth completed studies at UNE looking at the expression of a number of key immune proteins in Coeliac Disease. and recently completed his PhD in Immunology investigating ways to improve the diagnosis of Coeliac Disease.

How can data be collected, and used to inform us about sporting performance? Practical activity,  sprint, vertical jump, peak power testing, grip strength.

Matt Pine is the Strength and Conditioning Co-ordinator for the UNE Sports Academy and works for UNE Discovery, a science-based outreach program implemented in schools in Northern NSW.
