This Experience Day will provide an opportunity for students to be exposed to life on campus, focusing on academic preparation, careers and hands-on experience in the UNE School of Humanaties, Arts & Social Science, with a focus on Archaeology and History.
Archaeology: Adjunct Prof Wendy Beck & Colin Ahoy Jr. Students will be presented with an introduction to Archaeology as a study path and career, explore a bush Botany walk, visit the Aboriginal Stone Quarry on Clarks Farm at UNE, the UNE Archaeology Lab, and Indigenous Plant Garden.
Adjunct Prof Wendy Beck was first appointed Lecturer in 1986. Her research interests include Place Studies in Archaeology, Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and the Archaeology of Plants. While retired, she continues archaeological pursuits and fieldwork. Since her initial research in Arnhem Land in the 1980s, Wendy has developed a longstanding interest in transdisciplinary and community-based field research.
History: Dr Lorina Barker. Following an introduction to Songlines, the foundation of Aboriginal cultures, lores and histories, in smaller goups students will choose a Songline and learn about the epic journey and different episodes of that story. They will then draw, carve or paint the story on a message stick or memory board.
BarkerDr Lorina L. Barker is a Wangkumara, Muruwari and Kurnu-Barkandji scholar from northwest NSW. She is also a descendant of the Adnyamathanha (Ikara-Flinders Rangers SA), Kunja and Kooma (southwest QLD). Dr Barker is a senior lecturer at the UNE and a founding member of the Taragara Aboriginal Corporation. She is the Lead Chief investigator of the ARC project, Songlines of Country and a project manager of the community project Yarning Online OnCountry.
