How familiar are you with the different types of social media?

Do you use any or all of these digital tools?

  • Social networking (Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+).
  • Microblogging (Twitter, Tumblr).
  • Photo sharing (Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest).
  • Video sharing (YouTube, Facebook Live, Periscope, Vimeo).

When you use these digital tools do you think about the impact you might be having on others? Or on your own safety and future?

Statistics indicate that 72% of the world is using social media. In 2020, an estimated 3.6 billion people were using social media worldwide, a number projected to increase to almost 4.41 billion in 2025.

Hana Basha, a London Lawyer who specialises in defamation, privacy and breach of confidence writes that lawyers refer to social networking platforms (like those listed above) as “cowboy country” because they seem to operate outside of normal social laws and rules. “People have the ability to communicate instantly and informally and this gives many a sense that they are chatting to friends, when in fact they are publishing their thoughts to the world, often with greater impact and circulation than traditional forms of media.”
